Gautam Gambhir appointed as new head coach of Indian Cricket Team, succeeds Rahul Dravid, aims for more ICC titles.
Gautam Gambhir Appointed as New Head Coach: Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially announced on Tuesday that Gautam Gambhir will be the new head coach of the Indian Cricket Team. The news was confirmed by BCCI Secretary Jay Shah on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter).
“It is with immense pleasure that I welcome Mr @GautamGambhir as the new Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team. Modern-day cricket has evolved rapidly, and Gautam has witnessed this changing landscape up close,” Shah wrote on X.
This announcement comes after Team India’s triumph in the T20 World Cup under the leadership of cricketing legend Rahul Dravid. Gambhir, who recently led Kolkata Knight Riders to victory in the IPL 2024, will now take on the role of guiding the national team. Known for his crucial innings in the 2007 and 2011 title-winning campaigns, Gambhir is expected to bring more ICC titles and success to the Indian cricket team.
“The Board also congratulates Mr. Paras Mhambrey (Bowling Coach), Mr. T. Dilip (Fielding Coach), and Mr. Vikram Rathour (Batting Coach) on a highly successful tenure. The BCCI values their contribution and wishes them the best going forward,” the BCCI stated in a media release.
Gautam Gambhir expressed his excitement and honor at being appointed as the head coach. “It is an absolute honour to serve my tricolour, my people, my country. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Rahul Dravid and his team of support staff for their exemplary run with the team. I am honoured and excited to take on the role of Head Coach for Team India,” Gambhir said on X.
“I have always taken pride while donning the Indian jersey during my playing days, and it is going to be no different when I take up this new role. Cricket has been my passion, and I look forward to working closely with the BCCI, Head of Cricket – Mr. VVS Laxman, the support staff, and, most importantly, the players, as we work towards achieving success in the upcoming tournaments,” he added.
It is speculated that Gambhir’s coaching partner, Abhishek Nayar, might join the Indian team’s support staff. There are also rumors that Rahul Dravid might be considered for the head coach position of Kolkata Knight Riders, given his familiarity with the team.
Changes in Team Selection Under Gambhir
Gambhir is known for his straightforward approach and dedication to performance over popularity. This trait has sometimes put him at odds with fans of players like Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni. Gambhir has made it clear that he values the collective effort of the team over individual accolades, as evidenced by his past statements.
With Kohli and Rohit Sharma having retired, Gambhir faces an easier task in selecting his best players without fan pressure. However, players like Shubman Gill, Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube, and Mohammed Siraj might find their positions under scrutiny if they do not consistently perform well.
Gambhir’s tenure as head coach promises to be an exciting chapter in Indian cricket, focusing on merit and team performance as India prepares for upcoming tournaments.
