Tragic Incident at Rau’s IAS Coaching Centre: Three UPSC Aspirants Lose Lives Due to Basement Flooding

Protests Erupt as Delhi Government Faces Scrutiny Over Safety Measures; Political Leaders Demand Accountability

Heavy Rainfall Triggers Deadly Flooding at Delhi Coaching Centre, Prompting Protests and Political Outcry

In a heart-wrenching incident at Rau’s IAS coaching centre in Old Rajendra Nagar, Delhi, three UPSC aspirants tragically lost their lives due to flooding in the basement of the institution. The calamity struck during heavy rainfall, causing the basement to become inundated and trapping the students inside. Despite efforts to rescue them, the students could not be saved.

The Delhi Police have swiftly detained the owner and coordinator of the coaching centre, launching an investigation to determine the exact cause of the flooding. Initial reports suggest that the heavy rainfall overwhelmed the drainage system, leading to the tragic outcome. However, detailed findings are awaited.

This incident has sparked a wave of protests among UPSC aspirants in the area, who are demanding stringent action against those responsible for this preventable tragedy. The outcry reflects the frustration and anger of students who believe that their safety has been compromised.

Prominent political leaders have also weighed in on the incident. Rahul Gandhi expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased students, emphasizing the need for robust safety measures in educational institutions. The Delhi government is now under intense scrutiny for the safety protocols in place at such facilities.

BJP National Spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari criticised Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, attributing the tragedy to what he described as Kejriwal’s negligence. Bhandari accused the Delhi government of failing to address safety concerns, thereby endangering the lives of students. He also called for accountability from AAP leaders Atishi and Durgesh Pathak.

BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj echoed these sentiments, highlighting that local residents had been requesting drainage system maintenance for a week prior to the incident. She asserted that the government’s failure to act on these requests directly contributed to the flooding and the subsequent loss of lives. “These children came here to create their future,” Swaraj stated, “But the government of CM Arvind Kejriwal and MLA Durgesh Pathak did not listen to any requests of the local people. People had been asking Durgesh Pathak for the last week to get the drainage systems cleaned. There are still 2.5 feet of waterlogged on the street… Arvind Kejriwal and Durgesh Pathak are responsible for the deaths.”

As investigations continue, the focus remains on ensuring justice for the victims and preventing such tragedies in the future. The incident underscores the urgent need for better infrastructure and proactive safety measures in educational institutions across the city.
